Mountain Biking - Whistler, BC Region

Sea to Sky Country is one of the best developed regions for mountain biking in British Columbia, Canada. The biking trails are well networked, filled with fantastic scenery and are well marked in many cases. In the region there are mountain biking trails and parks dedicated to thrill the mountain biking enthusiast to no end. And there are multi-use trails shared with hikers, backpackers, off roaders and horseback riders.

mountainbike in Whistler, BC RegionThe mountain biking trails are mostly open from late spring to late fall... but this is based on the snow levels and the rate of snow melt at the higher elevations in many cases. The most popular destination in the region is the Whistler Mountain Bike Park with over 200+ kilometres of trails. Then there are the wilderness mountain biking trails in the backcountry exploring the forests, roaring down single track rooted trails avoiding deadfall trees and washouts.

In Whistler BC, Canada the backcountry trails that seem to get the most attention are the routes, in and around, Showh Lake including the Ancient Cedars Forest Trail. While, north of Whistler, in Pemberton BC many mountain bikers enjoy the remote trails wandering around Birkenhead Lake. When riding in the Squamish, BC area many bikers plan a visit to the Garibaldi Highlands and out to the Mamquam River Trails.

But it seems the main attraction for mountain bikers is the extensive ramps, jumps and wooden bridges at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. From the gondola in Whistler Village mountain bikers load and ride to the top of the mountain in anticipation of a pure adrenaline ride charging down the mountain.

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park includes 3 skill centres (Fitzsimmons, Olympic and Intermediate) and 4 main jump parks (Joyride, Joyride Drop Off, Boneyard and Kona). The main concentration of parks and jumps (Fitzsimmons, Olympic and Kona) are located near the Olympic Station accessed by a mountain bike trail or by the Village Whistler Express Gondola. A little closer to the Whistler home base is the Boneyard Slopestyle Park accessed by the Coming Home, Biker X and GLC Drops trails.

The Whistler Mountain Bike Park has a total of 41 main mountain bike trails. The trail system is designed for all levels of biker from easy, intermediate to advanced. With trail names like Goats Gully, No Joke, Smoke and Mirrors, Clown Shoes and Freight Train it is no wonder why this park is taking off.

In the villages and on Whistler Mountain are various rental and mountain biking shops. Some shops provide lessons while the mountain bike park definitely provides lessons and equipment.

All biking enthusiasts must have a helmet and remain under control at all times while exploring the trails, jumps and skill centres. Safety first and common sense makes the ride last longer eh!
