Cheakamus Lake - South of Whistler, British Columbia, Canada is the pristine area of Cheakamus Lake resting high up in the mountains at an elevation of over 900 metres. The mountains towering around the lake stretch another 1600 metres into the sky throwing reflections of snow capped peaks back onto the lake.

The easy grade, very well maintained hard earth trail leading to Cheakamus Lake is 3 Km in length. The trail wanders over wooden bridges spanning over creeks leading explorers through a swath of trees, past forest floors cushioned with moss and deadfall. It is not uncommon to see people along the trail with a kayak or canoe in tow.

The Cheakamus Lake Trail is a comfortable one-way hiking trail which should take no longer than an hour to complete. The hiking trail eventually butts up to the shoreline of the lake. From the lakeshore, continue following the lake for a few hundred more metres and the trail eventually runs into a wilderness campground.

The Cheakamus Lake Trail is located in Garibaldi Provincial Park. Like many trails in the Provincial Park the Cheakamus Trail provides hikers access to some of the other trails in the park system. From the trailhead of the Cheakamus the Singing Creek Trail is 7 Km away and the Helm Creek Trail is 8.5 Km.

From Cheakamus Lake explorers can hike to the Black Tusk via Helm Creek. From the Cheakamus Trailhead follow the directional signs pointing to Helm Creek. Follow the creek past the Helm Creek wilderness campground. Continue pass the Cinder Flats to the upper lakes and the meadows. Follow the signs to the Black Tusk. The trip is just under 15 Km and should take 6-8 hours one way.

There are other marked trailheads found along the long gravel road leading to the parking lot of the Cheakamus Trailhead. On the drive up look for the blue signs marking the trail entrances to the Farside Trail, Highline Trail and the Crator Lookout Trail.
