Sea to Sky Highway
- The main transportation route
connecting all vehicle traffic between Vancouver and the communities
of Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton is the Sea to Sky Highway (Hwy
99). The highway is a series of twists and turns following a ridge
high up on the mountainside with Howe
Sound below.
Highway 99 is a very scenic route climbing mountains, crossing
rivers and driving through forests. The Sea to Sky Highway (Hwy
99) has many opportunities along the way to view some spectacular
wilderness areas and communities.
The Tantalus Provincial Park, Cypress Provincial Park and Garibaldi
Provincial Park are along the route. The Sea to Sky Highway
navigates through five distinct biogeoclimatic zones traveling through
Squamish, Garibaldi Provincial Park and the Resort of Whistler.
From the Horseshoe Bay BC Ferry terminal visitors arrive coming
from Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island and from the Sunshine Coast.
Horseshoe Bay in North Vancouver is the southern terminus of the
Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99). Lillooet, about 190 miles (310
km) north, is its northern entrance.
The southern portion of the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway
99) connects to the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) at Horseshoe
Bay. The northern terminus lies at the junction with Highway 97,
about 7 miles (11 km) north of Cache Creek.
As the Olympics are approaching in the year of 2010 there is ongoing
major improvements happening daily such as rock scaling, bridge
reinforcement, and frequent passing lane additions. Beware that
some of the sections of this predominantly two-lane road can still
be extremely treacherous in bad weather.
Always drive cautiously but not at a snails pace as to frustrate
those who are more familiar with the Sea to Sky. There are pull-out
areas along the way to pull over your vehicle so to let other vehicles
pass. |
