Once an isolated resource community, Britannia Beach, was the location of one of Canada's largest mines. The mine extracts ore from the surrounding mountains and extracts copper from the waste rock. It was the major employer of the day in the area.

Britannia Beach townsite developed around the mine which was largest producer of copper in the British Empire. For many years boating was the transportation of convenience. It was not until the railway and the roads broke through to the townsite that easy access became available.

The mine operated for 70 years from 1904 - 1974. The large building built into the side of the mountain that is in view when entering the townsite was recognized as a National Historic Site by the Canadian Government in 1987.

Today the mine operates as a museum. There are regular tours that take you down memory lane of how it use to be on the west coast. There are samples of equipment, machinery and tools used in the time of the mines.

Townsite Access - South of Squamish, BC, Canada on the Sea to Sky Highway (Hwy 99) is the townsite of Britannia Beach. It is easily recognized by the mine built into the side of the mountain.
