4x4 Off Roading - In the remote areas around the villages of Whistler, Squamish and Pemberton BC in Sea to Sky Country are many roads leading further into the wilderness. Many of these roads navigate high altitude cliff roads, climb over boulders, cross wooden bridges, visit alpine lakes and connect to remote communities.
The off road gravel roads are mostly active logging roads and deactivated gravel roads. Active logging roads means other 4x4 traffic and massive logging trucks travel the roads. The roads are relatively covered with pot holes and visibility can be hindered when large vehicles pass kicking up dust clouds.
Active FSR roads (Forest Service Roads) are heavily used by logging trucks carrying heavy topped-up loads of logs. Big vehicles often taking up most of the narrow road. So always have your vehicle lights on, seatbelts clipped in and be prepared to pull to the side and let the big boys pass... and the idiot drivers too.
The deactivated roads is where the fun begins as they are less used and usually are over grown to some extent. The roads are accessed, mostly, by 4x4s, ATVs, motorcycles and mountain bikes. The roads tend to be in poor shape with many loose boulders and washouts coving the road. Many deactivated roads are steep and lead no where while many lead to spectacular scenery while others end abruptly because of deadfall trees falling across the road or rivers and lakes flooding.
The gravel road routes which require a 4x4 at some time during the trip when exploring Whistler , BC region include Callaghan Lake, Madelay Lake and Showh Lake. There are more off roading destinations in the region but these tend to be the most remote, secluded routes with a beautiful end destination.
While off roading in the Pemberton, BC area there are some back roads that explore the cliffside traveling on the backside of Anderson and Carpenter Lakes. It is a tricky drive, the road is narrow and there are many wooden bridges. The route leads to the small communities of Seton Page and Gold Bridge... eventually leading to Lillooet, BC, Canada. If you have a 4x4 it is an alternate route to take instead of the highway.
