Windsurfing & Kiteboarding - The winds that funnel down Howe Sound, bouncing off mountain slopes creates an ideal setting for windsurfers and kiteboarders in Squamish BC. therefore attracting the world to the region. The community is fast becoming a prime destination from spring to fall for all who love surfing the wind and basking in the sun.

There are, also, remote wind locations at some of the alpine lakes scattered throughout Sea to Sky Country. From the coastline the winds head inland through the maze of mountains and down into the valleys sweeping across the lake surfaces fueling the winds for windsurfers. Unfortunately these areas are kept close to the chest by the locals and are not widely shared.

By far, the most popular destination for wind enthusiasts is the long peninsula jutting out onto Howe Sound called The Spit. It is here where enthusiasts mainly meet to tackle the big winds. On any given day people can watch, up close and personal, the many adventurers who take to the winds from the sandy shores at The Spit.

The powerful coastal winds of The Spit are created by the cool and warm air currents funneling down Howe Sound. The looming mountains create a wind tunnel which in turn increases the wind speed. As a result the wind currents tumble down the valley bouncing off mountain crags directing the winds inward creating excellent conditions for kiteboarders and windsurfers.

It is important that all who enjoy a day windsurfing and kiteboarding understand the effect of the wind when striking the sail from all angles.. and to be able to interact with the lift and drag forces created by the winds at a moments notice. It is important because the winds are big and can be challenging when surfing out on The Spit.
