Heli-skiing - When entering Sea to Sky Country there are mountain ranges in every direction as far as the eye can see. From every village in the area, especially Whistler, Squamish and Pemberton, there are snow capped mountains riding the horizon one after the other. It is these mountains that skiers and snowboarders visit in the winter and early spring months via a helicopter for a day of heliskiing.
Heliskiing is a great way to explore the surrounding hills while enjoying a full day of pristine snow conditions. From high up above the mountain peaks helicopters lower skiers and boarders down into the valleys covered in untouched powder snow. It is an opportunity for many snow enthusiasts to experience the ultimate ski vacation when visiting Sea to Sky Country. Not a soul around except the people in your heliskiing group and the mountains.
There are many mountains in the area visited by heliskiing companies. Some of the more popular mountain destinations visited by helicopters are the Rainbow, Fee and Cayoosh Mountains near Whistler, BC, Canada. While some visit Place Glacier or Handcar Peak near Pemberton for heliskiing.
Most helicopter ski touring companies provide heliskiing vacations for groups and individuals. Most group sizes are from 4 -6 people. The touring companies usually provide a shuttle service to their base camp, a meal up in the alpine mountains, video or photo services and a course on safety training.
The amount of ski runs enjoyed during a day depends on the package purchased. Package price depends on the size of the group and amount of days skiing. Some ski packages are for 1 day while others are for many days and include some sort of lodge accommodations.
The mountain destinations that heliskiers visit and the amount of ski runs enjoyed depends on the experience level of the skier. Beginner ski packages provide an opportunity to ski 5000-10,000 vertical feet while the more experienced heliskier would have the opportunity to ski 9000 - 15000 vertical feet.
Heli-skiing is not for everyone. It is, however, for the adventurous who enjoy some time alone on a mountain skiing.
